Everything You Need to Know About Senior Portraits

A few thoughtful answers can make planning your session feel much easier.

Senior portrait session planning with Perception Signature Photography in Harlan, IA.

Senior year is such an exciting milestone, and your senior portraits should reflect who you are during this once-in-a-lifetime season of life. Whether you're just beginning to plan your session or already have a date on the calendar, it's normal to have questions!

To help make the process stress-free and fun, I've put together answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about senior photography sessions.

What should I wear for my senior session?

Choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Most seniors bring multiple outfit options to create variety in their gallery.

Some tips include:

  • Wear clothing that reflects your personality.
  • Avoid large logos and distracting graphics.
  • Mix casual and dressy outfits.
  • Bring accessories like jackets and hats to mix up looks for the same outfit

When you book your session, I can help guide you through outfit planning so you feel fully prepared.

How many outfits should I bring?

Most senior sessions include 3–4 outfit changes, depending on the session option booked. Bringing a variety of styles helps create a gallery that feels unique and personalized.

Popular outfit choices include:

  • Casual everyday wear
  • Dressy attire
  • Sports uniforms
  • College gear
  • Hobby or activity-related clothing

When is the best time to schedule senior portraits?

The best time to schedule your senior portraits is during the summer before your senior year or early in the fall. This gives you plenty of time to use your images for yearbook deadlines, graduation announcements, and social media posts. Many seniors get busy with extracurricular activities once the school year starts - so keep in mind that it can be harder to get pictures scheduled during that busy time.

Popular seasons include:

  • Summer for lush greenery, wild flowers and golden sunsets (June-Aug)
  • Fall for colorful leaves and cozy vibes (late Sept-end of Oct)
  • Late spring for blooming flowers and softer temperatures, less bugs and humidity

Because prime dates fill quickly, booking early is always recommended. Especially if you need a weekend date.

Where Will My Session Take Place?

Senior sessions can be held at a variety of locations based on your interests and style.

Popular choices include:

  • Parks and nature trails
  • Downtown areas
  • Open fields
  • Lakes and beaches
  • Urban locations
  • Family farms
  • Sporting venues

The goal is to choose locations that help tell your story and showcase your personality. I travel within 60 miles of Harlan, Iowa for no additional travel fee. Feel like a downtown Omaha shoot? No Problem! Want a more natural but unique location like Ledges State Park in Boone? Lets go!

What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?

Don’t worry - most seniors say this before their session!

You do not need modeling experience. Throughout the session, I’ll guide you through poses, expressions, and natural movements so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to look.

My goal is to make the experience relaxed, fun, and confidence-boosting.

How long does a senior session last?

Session length varies depending on the package selected/number of outfits and locations, but most senior portrait sessions last between 60 and 120 minutes.

This allows time for outfit changes, multiple locations, and plenty of variety in your final gallery.

Can I include meaningful locations or props?

Absolutely! Props can help personalize your senior session and highlight the activities that have been important throughout your high school years.

Ideas include:

  • Sports equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Books
  • Vehicles
  • Pets
  • Graduation cap and gown
  • Hobby-related items
  • Pets

The best props are meaningful and help tell your unique story.

Incorporating a favorite place can make your portraits feel even more personal. Those details help tell your story and create images that feel connected to this moment in your life.

What Happens If the Weather Is Bad?

Weather can be unpredictable, especially here in the Midwest. If conditions are unsafe or would negatively impact your session; we’ll simply reschedule for the next available date.

Cloudy skies are often beautiful for portraits, so don’t worry if the forecast isn’t full sunshine.

When Will I Receive My Photos?

Turnaround times vary by season, but most senior proof galleries are delivered within 7-10 business days of your session.

Once your gallery is ready; you’ll be able to view your proof images and choose which ones you'd like to order. Some clients prefer to schedule an appointment to order and go over their images in the studio.

Ready to Book Your Senior Session?

Your senior year deserves to be celebrated and remembered. Senior portraits are more than just photos - they capture your personality, accomplishments, and the excitement of what’s ahead.

The right questions lead to a session that feels comfortable, personal, and memorable from start to finish.

If you’re ready to create senior portraits that truly reflect who you are, I’d love to help you plan a session that’s completely customized to you.
